When a ship is taken into any place to load /unload the cargo, the operation involving tying of ship to any fixed point using mooring ropes and cables so that it can be hold firmly at a place is called as ‘Mooring Operation’.

Ships can be moored in different ways :-

  1. Mooring at jetty (eg. any terminals on land in ports bulk terminals, passengers terminals, tankers terminals)
  2. SBM (Single Buoy Mooring ) ,which is also is called as onshore terminal, in which ships like tankers can be Moored.

What is purpose of mooring?

  • For efficient and reliable transportation of cargo and for prevention of accidents of ships like grounding, collision with vessels in vicinity and oil spillage, etc.
  • When a ship is at port or loading terminal it is necessary to properly secure ship to any fixed remedy ,so that it will prevent the ship  from drifting because of currents, tides ,winds and turbulence created by movements of ships in vicinity.
Mooring (Mooring Buoy)
  • A vessel can  be hold at one place with help heavy  ropes and hawsers of different material and characteristics, which prevents the forward-after, athwartships movements of ships, when she is at berth.

    2. Synthetic fibre Ropes
    3. Steel wire Ropes.

What is Mooring Buoy ?

Mooring Buoy is floating offshore terminal which connects underwater pipeline onto refineries on the land. A Tanker vessel can be moored to this mooring buoy for loading/unloading of cargo . In this operation ,there are 3 teams involved:-

  1. Ships personnel involved in tanker operation
  2. Loading Master at SBM(single buoy mooring)
  3. Shoreside crew (eg. at refineries)

SBM moors a tanker at single point and weathervane about that point. It is anchored to seabed and connected with subsea pipelines through subsea hoses.

How to tie up to a mooring buoy?

Pre-tanker berthing checks:-

  1. Inspections of mooring hawser for any visible damage and ensure sound health
  2. Inspection of floating hoses for any damage, loose flanges/boltened,leakage /breakage and ensure it is streaming freely.
