Boiler Mountings & Their Purposes

Boiler Mountings

Necessity of Boiler Mountings

As mentioned earlier, boiler mountings are a set of devices which are necessary for the smooth and safe functioning of a boiler. Sometimes a boiler may get damaged due to extreme pressure, steam flow back, unregulated pressure. So to inspect any kind of trouble inside or outside the boiler and to prevent any possible explosion or damage, we require boiler mountings. A boiler cannot operate without boiler mountings. In other words, boiler mountings are compulsory.

Different Boiler Mountings

Below is a list of boiler mountings:

  1. Steam stop valve
  2. Boiler safety valve
  3. Boiler level gauge glass
  4. Boiler vent
  5. Feed check valve
  6. Pressure Gauge
  7. Boiler blowdown valve
  8. Scum gate valve
  9. Whistle valve
  10. Low level alarm
  11. Soot blower
  12. Automatic feed water regulator
  13. Manhole
  14. Mud box
  15. TDS sensor and probe

Boiler Mountings & Their Function

STEAM STOP VALVE

As the name suggests, a steam stop valve is used to stop the steam. So it mainly works as a steam regulator. It is placed at the highest part of the boiler so that maximum steam can be driven out.

BOILER SAFETY VALVE

It is used to reduce the excessive unsafe pressure inside a boiler.Generally a boiler should be equipped with atleast two safety valves. It is located on the boiler steam drum.

BOILER LEVEL GAUGE GLASS

A level indicator showing the amount of fluid in a storage place.According to the desired requirement the fluid can be stored or flushed out.

BOILER VENT

They are used to get rid of any air in the water. They can be both automatic as well as manual. It is used to avoid air related problems in the water piping.

FEED CHECK VALVE

It is installed between a pump and a boiler. It is used to control the supply of water to the boiler and prevent the escaping from the water from the boiler when the pump pressure is less or pump is stopped.

PRESSURE GAUGE

Pressure gauges are used to measure pressure using pressure sensing elements.

BOILER BLOWDOWN VALVE

They are mainly used to remove water from the boiler. They are also used to remove suspended solids from the system.

SCUM GATE VALVE

As the name suggests this is mainly used for scum removal known as scumming.

WHISTLE VALVE

Whistle valve is a one way valve which supplies steam directly from the boiler wherever required.

LOW LEVEL ALARM

It is a fluid monitoring alarm. If the fluid level drops than the desired amount the float switch triggers the alarm.

SOOT BLOWER

A soot blower is used to remove any deposited soot in the surface of the boiler pipes to prevent any kind of plugging of gases.

AUTOMATIC FEED WATER REGULATOR

It regulates the water and provides water to the boiler when required.

MAN HOLE

It is a space or a hole through which a man enters the boiler and inspects and repairs it.

TDS SENSOR AND PROBE

TDS stands for Total Dissolved Solids. It is a small hand device to indicate the total amount dissolved solids in a fluid usually water.
